The vision of the art department is to work diligently with young minds to help them discover their creative voice.
The mission of the Department of Art is to provide students with challenging and diverse experiences in art history, aesthetics, criticism, and studio production. The Department is directly involved in the cultural life of the community by providing museum and gallery exhibitions of professional and student artists.

Department of Art at Piedmont University offers various courses and opportunities to improve art and design practices, from undergraduate to art education degrees tailored for individuals who want to pursue their creative careers. The BA/BFA degrees in Art lead to careers as Artists + Designers + Curators, and + Makers. The Art students have rigorous concentrations in graphic design, ceramics, drawing, painting, photography, and sculpture.
The Bachelor of Arts (BA) allows flexibility for students planning to pursue an interdisciplinary double major or minor in another field. The Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) is a rigorous program designed for students planning to pursue a graduate degree in studio art or those seeking a professional career as an artist, graphic designer, or other related multimedia areas.

Building a future for our students begins with an environment that encourages community, education, innovation, and enrichment. For the past few years, the Department of Art has upgraded its state-of-the-art facilities, which include large format printers, vinyl plotters, 3D printers, Computer Numerical Control (CNC), Laser Cutters, and Engravers, M3 iMacs, Drawing Tablets and Drone, which will continue providing students with a transformational education that offers them a competitive edge in today’s job market.
Smith Williams Art Studios houses dedicated spaces in ceramics, drawing, digital fabrication, graphic design, painting, photography, printmaking, and sculpture. The Mason-Scharfenstein Museum of Art also houses a permanent collection and holds exhibitions bringing artists worldwide to Piedmont University.

While a strong academic foundation is necessary, Piedmont prides itself on fostering social and communal relationships on campus. Thanks to small class sizes, dedicated and personable faculty, and Division III athletics, our students develop a family community while pursuing their careers as art therapists. Piedmont University Requirement
PDMT 1101 Intro to College Life and Liberal Arts Tradition
Students who have not completed a minimum of 24 semester credit hours of college-level coursework upon admission to Piedmont University must meet this college requirement.
ART 2301: This course also satisfies a general education requirement and appears in the number of hours for both general education and the major; in reality, art majors may have 28 additional hours to use for electives. Students may use elective hours to earn a minor or another major, as well as to develop additional marketable skills. The number of elective hours students may take will depend on the courses taken to satisfy general education requirements.
Professional Portfolio Review: Upon the completion of four foundation classes, majors seeking admission to the BFA degree program must submit a portfolio for review by the art faculty. Portfolio reviews are conducted at the end of the fall and spring semester. Deadline dates are posted in the department by midterm. Contact the chair of the art department for specific requirements.
