The 2022 Piedmont Symposium will take place April 6. The application to participate is now closed, and students will be notified of their acceptances in March.
To prepare those who will participate in Symposium, faculty and staff members are sharing their tips for Symposium success:
“I encourage symposium participants to include a way to engage the audience with interactive exercises. Active participation usually sparks more interest and helps to establish a connection.”
Jaime Johnson-Huff, associate dean of the College of Nursing & Health Sciences and professor of nursing
“For oral presentations, my students practiced in the room where they were presenting a day before the Symposium. This helped them get familiar with the technology and feel more comfortable on stage.”
Susan Winstead, assistant professor of elementary education
Practice, practice, practice. The more you practice, the more comfortable you’ll feel presenting, answering questions, etc. It makes the experience so much more enjoyable when you feel confident, which comes with practice.
The people who are watching your presentation or looking at your poster are there to support you! They’re on your side and want to see you do well.
Don’t be afraid of making some mistakes. Allow yourself to be imperfect. The most important part is the process of getting up there and putting yourself in a — probably — slightly uncomfortable place.
Courtney McDaniel, assistant professor of natural sciences
