Radio Station Named for Beloved ‘Semi-Retired’ Professor Known as ‘DVC’
On May 1, Piedmont University’s Mass Communications Department held its annual MCOM Awards. These awards include fun superlatives for students and faculty, the James M. Cox Jr. Alumni Award, and faculty-selected awards. This year, the alumni award was given to Cale Padgett, class of 2009.
This year was special for the Mass Communications department as Dr. Dale Van Cantfort, DVC, is entering semi-retirement after 22 years of dedication to Piedmont University. The department reached out to alumni for “thank you, DVC” videos. They received back nearly 30 minutes of footage for DVC to keep forever. Film and Mass Communications double major, Nahomi Solorzano, was able to make a shortened version to present at the ceremony.
The evening concluded with DVC being presented with a plaque signifying that the radio studio in the Swanson Center has officially been named the “Dale Van Cantfort Radio Studio” as of May 1, 2024. A plaque has also been placed below the studio’s “on air” sign for all to see.
Van Cantfort has taught the department’s radio classes, Communication Law and Ethics class, Advertising and Communications class, and capstone class. After his semi-retirement, DVC will no longer be teaching the radio courses. He will be on campus on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Piedmont University and the Mass Communications Department congratulate DVC on his semi-retirement.
