Piedmont University was founded in 1897 with a bold charter: bring high-quality higher education to the students of rural Northeast Georgia. The forests were thick, the terrain was rocky, the future in such wilderness was anything but certain.
Piedmont broke ground, took root, and has thrived ever since, adding degree programs, state-of-the art facilities, a satellite campus in Athens, and athletic teams, all the while expanding its reach well beyond Appalachia.
In 2022-23, Piedmont marks its 125th anniversary, a milestone reached through sheer persistence and steadfast commitment to our founding mission of transforming lives through access to higher education.
Together, we celebrate Piedmont’s humble beginnings, remarkable growth, and all that is yet to come for an institution that began humbly — and has proven unstoppable.
