Local fans of author Barbara Brown Taylor were among the first to see her new book, "Learning to Walk in the Dark," at a reception, reading, and book signing April 9, in Demorest.

The free event was sponsored by the Piedmont College Mason-Scharfenstein Museum of Art.

In her 13th book, released worldwide just the day before, Taylor explores the ideas and traditions that equate darkness to the sinister. At the reception, she read selections from the book relating to the historical and religious connotations of caves.

Taylor is the Butman Professor of Religion at Piedmont College. An Episcopal priest since 1984, she is the author of 12 other books, including the New York Times bestseller "An Altar in the World." Her first memoir, "Leaving Church," met with widespread critical acclaim, winning a 2006 Author of the Year award from the Georgia Writers Association.
